Why should you wash your wig?

You should take care of your human hair wig properly so that the lovely wig can achieve maximum lifespan and the best appearance. Do not think that maintaining and washing your human hair wig is difficult. Actually, this process just requires attention and gentle care. A lot of human hair wigs are made with hair that has been dyed and chemically processed, meaning that there is no hair cuticle. Human hair wigs need to be handled gently because these processes make the hair more fragile.

How Often To Wash Your Human Hair Wig

APOHAIR highly recommends that you should wash your human hair wig every 7-14 days of wear. However, just keep in mind that each time your hairpiece is washed, its lifespan is shortened. That’s why the wig should not be washed too regularly. Using as few styling products as possible on your wig is good as this allows you to wash it less often and extend the wig’s life. Wearing a wig cap underneath will also help you extend the life of your wig. Wig cap is beneficial as it help adsorb scalp oils, keeping them away from the base of the cap.

You need to gently comb the wig out to remove all tangles before washing the hair. Let’s begin at the tips of the hair and work your way up to the base of the cap. Remember to use a comb designed for wigs. For stubborn tangles, apply a spray conditioner to loosen them.

A lot of hair salons suggest that you should sink your human hair wig in a basin of water with a small amount of shampoo to wash the hair. However, APOHAIR does not encourage that way. Doing so can tangle the wig, making it highly unmanageable. To wash your human hair wig, you need to start by getting it wet under running water. You can hold the wig under the faucet from your sink (only if the hair is short). For longer wigs, you can hold the wig under the faucet of your bathtub or shower so that the hair will not get tangled in the basin below.

After that, let cool water flow over the hair from the base to the tips until it is wet. Now you gently squeeze (do not wring or twist) to remove excess water. Apply a small amount of wig shampoo to the palms of your hands and apply evenly over the hairpiece. Do not twist, rub or massage. You just need to smooth the shampoo on the wig from the base to the tips of the hair. Using cool water to gently rinse all shampoo from the hair. Remember to allow the water to flow over the hair from the base to the tips. Gently rinse until all shampoo has been removed. Lightly squeeze excess water from the hair instead of rubbing.

How to Condition Your Wig

Spread a small amount of conditioner into the palm of your hands, work evenly in the hair while it is still wet. Avoid the application of conditioner to the wig base as it can loosen the knots on the cap, leading to hair loss. Leave the conditioner in the hair about 3-5 minutes. While the hair is wet and saturated with your wig conditioner, detangle the wig gently by starting at the tips of the hair and working your way up. Although your fingertips are the most gentle,  a wide-toothed wig comb can also be gently used in this case. You should not stretch the hair. Thoroughly rinse the conditioner from the hair under cool running water and that’s all.

Drying & Styling Your Human Hair Wig

It is best to allow your human hair wig naturally dry on a wig stand as this is most gentle on the hair fibers. You can use rollers to set the wig. You can also use some heat styling tools such as curling irons and flat irons to style the hair, but only after the hair is dry. Do not forget to use styling products (such as hair spray) that are specifically designed for human hair wigs.
